  1. I have taken metformin at different times over the last 6 years. It was a miracle drug when I was trying to get pregnant. At that time I was only taking 500mg. The doctor would like me to be on it all the time but it makes me really sick. I mean really sick! When you can't function, it's just not worth it!

  2. I was just told that I have PCOS So it is very ne to me. I was given this to take 500mg a day, however I took it only for a week because I felt aweful during that time, experienced severe bloating and weight gain(about 6lbs) in that week. I never read anything about that happening while taking it so I was shocked when this happened. I am going back to the doctor this week and am curious to see what the doctor will say. I will keep you posted! Looking forward to reading more info you put on your blog.

  4. I took met for a few weeks and it made me super sick diarrhea non stop for the entirety of time on it. I asked my doctor about it and he said to give it about 2 months to work in and do it's thing and if it still caused problems to stop...2 months later I stopped taking it! It really seemed to hinder and not help.

  7. I have been taking one 750 mg of Metformin daily, which is the dose my Endo prescribed. He upped me to take two months later, however, I had lost so much weight, so quickly, from the medicine and going to the gym 3-4 times a week, that I took it upon myself to go back down to one. (I'm petite and wear a size 0/2 pants...quite thin,I know!)
No other side effects though that other ladies have experienced.
Now I've decided to start taking two a day as my hair thinning/loss is increasing and has me at a desperate breaking point.
Have been on it since June/July '09.

  8. I take 3 XR 500mg tablets a day now. I started on 2 and upped the dose as per my endos instructions if i felt that my body could handle it. I was tired and had diarrhea for about 2 weeks when i fist started on the 2 tablets. Its all good now and its helped a lot. I sometime gets diarrhea if i eat things with too much sugar - but that is my own fault!!

  9. I have taken Metformin in the past and it had little to no effect on my PCOS symptoms. My fertility specialist recently told me that new studies are showing that it is not as effective as previously thought and has actually advised me not to take it.

  10. I was just prescribed Metformin (my husband and I have been trying to conceive). The doc started me on 500 mg for 2 weeks (take 1 pill a day before bed), then 2 pills a day (morn and night), then 3 pills a day (1 morn, 2 night), and then 4 pills a day (2 morn, 2 night) to get my body adjusted to 2000 mg of Metformin. I have a feeling she will also prescribe Clomid to go along with the Metformin. So far, no side effects to speak of. I am trying to cut out the dairy and carbs and eat more protein.

  11. I take 3 XR 500mg tablets a day now. Started one once a day for a week. week 2 increased to 2 pills, one in AM one in evening and now one am, afternoon, and pm. most side effects at the begining. not much now and loving it because my body is better tolerating me putting food in it, where as before my hands would randomly swell as I processed food. (28 YO Female at Avg weight)

  12. I live in a small country like town, with doctor's who barely know what to do it seem's. I was diagnosed with PCOS one month before I turned 23. It's so hard to deal. I know I'm not suppose to, but I really do stress over it. It seem's like it will never get better. I want to have a baby someday & I'm scared that I never will because I Don't know how bad it is. What make's it even worse is that I don't know if my Doctor know's exactly what to do about it. Seriously stressed & Feeling Stuck!

  13. Ladies, Acupuncture and herbs!!! that's what got me back on track. I didn't present with insulin resistance so I refused to be put on metformin. with exercise, yoga, and eating whole foods (barely any processed foods) I have seen a dramatic improvement. also staying away from xenoestrogens. All of my home cleaning products and body/hair/face/makeup is all organic/natural/mineral based. Check out dr. John Lee and Sherill Sellman. I have researched so much on this. If anyone would like further info email me: shanleighloyola@gmail.com

  15. I dont know why your doctor would have you on mirena as a source to help with pcos when i was diagnosed they took me RIGHT off of mirena and have me on a pill now mirena is very bad about weight gain and isnt the same as a pill that will regulate you much better.

    1. My thing is I'm allergic to all birth control. But they had to regulate my periods so I don't get cervical cancer. That was really the only other option. In my case.

  16. I have taken Metformin for the last 25 years for treatment of pcos. My pre medication insulin levels where in the 120's and are in the teens with medication. As a nurse I think this is one of the most important symptoms to control. The advice to avoid white carbs and processed foods is also very helpful. For years I thought metformin was causing the bloat and diarrhea until I started avoiding "white foods" and no longer have those problems. I saw an endocrinologist for the first 10 years after my diagnosis. Even she had to educate herself on pcos treatment. I work as a postpartum RN and take care of a few pcos mom's here and there, the trick is to regulate your periods and metformin will do that, Good luck.
